47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr, Manhattan (B D F M)
Find your way to the final scene of Home Alone 2
Borough: Manhattan
Neighborhood: Midtown Manhattan
Train line: B, D, F, M
The 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr stop is a major Midtown express and local hub on the Sixth Avenue line. From this station, you can visit one of New York City’s most iconic commercial and cultural complexes, the Rockefeller Center. Within a few blocks, you’ll find the Top of the Rock, the NBC headquarters, Radio City Music Hall, and in the winter, the famous Rockefeller Center ice skating rink and Christmas tree. Every December I like to make a trip here to see the tree, and then I’ll walk a block down to 5th Avenue to see the famous lights display at Saks Fifth Avenue, pop into St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and and check out all of the beautiful storefronts. Though packed to the brim with out-of-towners, this part of the city is always magical in December.
The 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr station was built as part of the IND Sixth Avenue Line, part of the city-owned and operated Independent Subway System (IND), which was developed under the leadership of the NYC Board of Transportation to break the private transit monopoly held by the IRT and BMT. As outlined in the city’s plan for a municipally operated subway network championed by Mayor John F. Hylan and continued by Mayor Jimmy Walker, the Board of Transportation built the Sixth Avenue Line which runs through the heart of Manhattan, connecting Lower Manhattan to Upper Manhattan and The Bronx. The station opened on December 15, 1940, along with the rest of the initial Sixth Avenue Line segment.
47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr station was originally part of the Independent Subway System (IND), which merged with the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) and the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) in 1940 to form the subway system as we know it today.
